[EVENT] Choc Beer brings home Gold from GABF!

•September 28, 2009 • Leave a Comment

The Great American Beer Festival, which is the largest commercial beer competition in the world, was held over the weekend in Denver, Colorado.

And Oklahoma’s very own Choc Beer Company, received a gold medal for their Signature Dubbel, which was entered into the Belgian-Style Abbey Ale category, beating out, among others Allagash Brewing which took silver and Deschutes Brewery getting the bronze.

There were 49,000 attendees to this years event, with 495 breweries entering 3,308 beers into the competitions. So getting any medal is a feat of its own. But winning gold is a big time award for Choc and for the state of Oklahoma beer scene in general. Since breweries can use these awards as a selling point on their products, this is just one more step in helping put Oklahoma on the beer map.

The GABF competition attracted 132 international beer judges from ten countries. Award-winning brewers received prestigious gold, silver and bronze medals in 78 beer categories, establishing the best examples of each style in the US.

So be sure to congratulate the guys over at Choc brewery for putting out another great product and winning a gold medal at the largest beer competition in the world.

You can check out my review of this award winning beer here.

Tulsa’s Marshall Brewing Company a top 50 pick

•September 25, 2009 • Leave a Comment

Nice article about Marshall Brewing being named a top 50 pick by Draft Magazine. Be sure to check out the OKC Craft Beer Examiner, Gary Lott does a good job over there!

#####

Holy beer movement, Batman! Oklahoma just received a national shout out in the July/August issue of Draft: Life on Tap magazine. No need to adjust your computer screens, I speak of truth, justice and beer for all.

Draft did an article featuring 50 beers in 50 states, and little ol’ Oklahoma was positioned in the magazine’s West section along with Arizona, Alaska, Nevada, Utah, Oregon, Washington, Colorado, New Mexico, Texas, Wyoming, California, and Hawaii. Some of these states are known for their production of craft beer, and others are relative new comers to the beer scene.

Oklahoma’s top choice beer picked by Draft was Marshall Brewery’s McNellie’s Pub Ale. A very interesting choice of beer, indeed. As far as I know, it’s only available on tap at both locations of McNellie’s Pub in OKC and Tulsa. Here’s what the boys at Draft had to say for the Sooner state’s pick:

“Though just a baby on Oklahoma’s brewing scene, Marshall has already become a local media darling with beers like McNellie’s. Delicately complex, this bitter gets its zing from English yeast and American hops.”

For a beer magazine, it’s not much in the way of a beer description. They even failed to mention this is a beer that is hand-pumped into the glass right at the bar. Let’s let Marshall speak for their selves about McNellie’s Pub Ale:

“Inspired by the house ales found in the pubs of Great Britain and Ireland, McNellie’s Pub Ale is a traditional ale brewed in the style of a Best Bitter. Various maltings of two-row barley are joined with American Glacier hops to give this beer its color, complexity, and a bit of a New World twist. The Old World character present in this ale is largely influenced by its yeast, which originates in the port city of Hull, East Yorkshire, England. McNellie’s Pub Ale pairs excellent with fish & chips (of course), Roast Beef, Steak, Pork, Grilled Chicken, and Barbeque. ABV – 5.0%”

Now that’s a beer description. Marshall Brewing Company is located in Tulsa and started brewing beers a couple of years ago. They’re one of four breweries to open in Oklahoma in the last few years. Marshall has helped open Oklahoma’s eyes to the craft brewing segment and produces some quality beers. Their beers are available in most liquor stores throughout Oklahoma.

Congratulations to Marshall Brewing Company for its mention in the latest issue of Draft. We wish them much success. If you haven’t noticed, there’s a storm on the horizon and it’s called the good beer movement. Welcome to Oklahoma!

Cheers!

Duvel, Ommegang, Maredsous….its about time!

•September 23, 2009 • 2 Comments

We received word that after waiting for what seemed like forever, since being announced months ago, that Duvel, Ommegang [Rare Vos, Three Philosphers, Abbey and Hennepin] as well as the Maredsous 10, will FINALLY be available in stores beginning today. I don’t have a list of stores that will actually be getting it in today, but I would say check your better beer stores.

We are still waiting on La Chouffe, and the Maredsous 6 and 8. But go out and enjoy the other fine, new additions. If anyone is thinking of getting a keg of the Hennepin, call me, Im free for the rest of the week! :)

[Just for Fun, Friday] Guinness to Muslims: Stay Away, but Come Party

•September 18, 2009 • Leave a Comment

Posted Sep 1st 2009 1:15AM by TMZ Staff

Muslims have been banned from attending a huge Guinness beer celebration headlined by the Black Eyed Peas later this month in Kuala Lumpur — and now the beer company is fighting back … kinda … sorta … not really.

The ban stems from an Islamic law prohibiting Muslims from the consumption of alcohol — and the Malaysian website for the event strictly states “Party is only open to non-Muslims aged 18 years and above.” How they will actually enforce it? No clue.

In a statement playing to all sides, Guinness tells TMZ: “The Ministry in Malaysia determines the parameters in which the concert can be handled. We will adhere to whatever the regulations are in the country. If that is their point of view, that’s their point of view,” but adds “Everybody has a right to go or not go to the concert.”

So, hear that Muslims — You’re banned … but go anyway.

[EVENT] Choctaw’s Oktoberfest Begins Today!

•September 9, 2009 • Leave a Comment

Choctaw Oktoberfest 2009, is set for September 9 – 12 under the Festival Pavilion in beautiful Choctaw Creek Park, located on Harper Street, 1/2 mile south of NE 23rd Street in Choctaw.

The annual Oktoberfest celebration has become a favorite destination for visitors from a multi-state area seeking homemade German food, genuine German beers and wine, and German music.

This year’s festival will feature more tent space, more kitchens, more family activities and more parking! The event will be staged under 30,000 square feet of tents and a Festival Pavilion providing a real German-Fest atmosphere.

The Turek family promises over 30 original German Draught Beers and International Wines to complement the menu of Schweinshaxen (hamhocks), Grilled Chicken, Rippchen (smoked pork chops), Apple Strudel and a variety of Bratwurstand Schnitzel sandwiches, Red Cabbage, Sauerkraut, German Potato Salad – all homemade in the Old Germany Festival Kitchen!

The Stabbing of the Keg kickoff ceremony will begin at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, September 9, featuring a very special guest winemaker from Germany, Fritz Hasselbach, Lt. Governor Jari Askins, The City of Choctaw Mayor Randy Ross and Mike Turek, proprietor of Old Germany Restaurant. Hasselbach has selected Choctaw Oktoberfest to make the U.S. debut with his newest wine creation “Fritz’s Riesling.”

The largest festival of its kind in Central Oklahoma promises continuous live entertainment for all ages. The entertainment line up for this year presents The Walburg Boys, The Alpen Musikanten, Alpenfest and the Polka Kings, plus special appearances by German Dance Groups.

Beer list includes what you would expect from an Oktoberfest, the usual German imported lagers, as well as some domestics. But be sure to go and support your local breweries as well, Choc Last Laugh, and Spahnie 363, as well as COOP’s Zeppelin and their newest beer released, an Oktoberfest, which I am really looking forward to trying.

Hope to see you there, Prost!
